Anthony Ashley Cooper, the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, is a well-known social reformer.
A champion of all marginalized groups, Shaftesbury is especially concerned for Jews, for there his concern is rooted in his religious identity. He will head the London Jews’ Society from 1848 until 1885.
He will make efforts to extend British protection to Jews in Ottoman lands and successfully persuade the British government to appoint a consul in Jerusalem to protect Christian and Jewish interests.
