The late 1880s sees the first wave of Zionist settlement. What makes Zionist immigrants different from earlier Jewish immigrants is their specifically political goal of paving the way for the national and spiritual resurrection of the Jewish people. The first two waves of Aliyah are made up of enthusiastic idealists. They will brave hunger, disease and death in their determination to rebuild the Land of Israel.
