With the rise of Zionism comes a renewed interest in military affairs.
Early efforts include the self-defense group Hashomer, which protects Jewish settlements in Palestine when the territory is still under Ottoman control.
Then there is the spy group NILI, which supplies military intelligence to the British and plays an important role in Britain’s successful conquest of Palestine.
The Jewish Legion, an all-Jewish force, will serve with the British army in the Land of Israel.
