In the Book of Genesis, God pledges to Abraham the Land of Israel “from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates.”
His descendants conquer the Holy Land under the leadership of Joshua. They establish a kingdom which reaches its height under King David and King Solomon.
The Jews will face successive invasions from the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Greeks and finally, the Romans, who will rename Israel Syria Palaestina in an attempt to erase all Jewish ties to the Land.
