Theodor Herzl, who quickly becomes the leader of the movement, faces bitter hostility, mainly from other Jews, who view him as endangering the gains they have fought so hard to win in the countries in which they reside.
For many it appears he plays into the hands of the anti-Semites by claiming the Jews are a distinct nation deserving of a country of their own.
