Jews welcome British rule in the Land of Israel with enthusiasm as the oppressive Ottoman regime is replaced with an enlightened Western one that promises to foster Zionist aspirations. But Jewish trust in the British soon turns to disappointment as Britain gradually retreats from its obligation to build a Jewish national home. The low point is reached on the eve of World War II when Britain decides to bar the gates of Palestine to Europe’s Jews on the eve of the Holocaust.
