In November, 1947, the UN announces its partition plan. The Jews are euphoric but the Arabs, unwilling to accept the existence of a Jewish state, attack with irregular forces inside the country. The British hand over key fortresses and tactical positions to the Arabs, who succeed in cutting communications between Jewish settlements. In May 1948, when the Jews formally declare their state, five Arab armies invade. Forced to fight, the Jews win their state although suffering heavy casualties.
