On November 29, 1947, the United Nations General Assembly passes the resolution to partition Palestine into two states: One Arab, one Jewish.
Two Arab guerrilla forces attack. Their successes sow doubts at the UN that the Jews can defend their state.
Recognizing they must take the initiative, the Jews break through to Jerusalem and make several military advances, putting their forces in a better position when David Ben-Gurion declares the state on May 14, 1948.
