Theodor Herzl was born on May 2nd, 1860 in the city of Pest, today part of Hungary’s capital of Budapest.
His sister’s tragic death leads to the family’s move to Vienna where Herzl enrolls in university and first encounters antisemitism.
Herzl goes on to enjoy a flourishing literary and journalistic career.
But events, including the killing of a French-Jewish captain in a duel, lead him to increasingly explore the Jewish problem in his writings.
